Protecting Tenon Cutter Blades from Corrosion: Lumberjack Tools

Lumberjack Tools is a successful family-run business located in the charming city of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. Founded in 2002, Lumberjack Tools designs and manufactures the tools and fixtures needed to make log furniture, including tenon cutters, blades, bits, draw knives, and log locks. Lumberjack Tools markets its products to customers throughout the United States and around the world, including Australia, New Zealand and many Eastern European countries. They pride themselves in manufacturing and servicing American made products of the highest quality and durability.

Logan Sullivan is the operations manager at Lumberjack Tools, and as such wears many hats. “I’ve worked full time at Lumberjack Tools for three years, and I do a little bit of everything,” says Sullivan. “I order materials, schedule production runs for manufacturing, assist with customer service and help create our User Guides. We are a small family-run company that my father founded in 2002, and I try to do whatever is needed to keep the business running smoothly.”

“We now apply HinderRUST immediately after the blades are ground and finished, and we really like the way the product coats the blades and makes them look even better. And, of course, the blades remain corrosion free.”

In the fall of 2017, Sullivan traveled to the FABTECH expo in Chicago, hoping to learn about the latest methods in metal fabrication. On day two of the event, he found himself in the Fluoramics booth where he learned how to protect manufactured parts from rust and corrosion.

“The Fluoramics booth was displaying a working salt fog chamber that accelerates the corrosion process, and they used this chamber to demonstrate the effectiveness of their HinderRUST product,” says Sullivan. “When I saw the exhibit and talked with a Fluoramics representative, I realized that HinderRUST might be a big improvement over the oil that we were using to keep our products rust free.

“Not long after FABTECH, I went to the Fluoramics website and purchased several HinderRUST products, including their new S4.0 Aerosol,” says Sullivan. “We then conducted a test with HinderRUST, several competitive products and some untreated blades, all of which we left outdoors for a month. HinderRUST performed very well, and we quickly decided to incorporate it into our manufacturing process.”

Lumberjack Tools now uses HinderRUST on all of its replacement blades and blade kits. “These are universal blades that can be used with multiple tools, and once these blades are manufactured, they go into our warehouse for anywhere from a few days up to year or more,” says Sullivan.

“In the past, we had been using a popular lubricant to protect our blades, but we noticed that once they had been in inventory for a while the lubricant had dried up and the blades were starting to pit. Our entire company is focused on producing the highest quality products for our customers, so we knew that we needed to find another solution.
