Recently I was doing product training with a sales team and used this analogy:
I am not sure if any of you have watched a girls beginner basketball game but I have. I don’t know what it is, but boys seem to know how to play the game from birth. They just know how to dribble the ball and play the game. Girls (not all) have to learn how to dribble, how to play the game, their position and what their position’s role is on the team. Well, my daughter went to a small school. Everyone lives for the basketball season and almost everyone plays, my daughter included. What I noticed at her first game was that although she could dribble the ball and understood the position she played, she missed many opportunities to set a pick, steal the ball, or block a shot…all because she was so focused on what she knew.
How does this relate to sales? When I’m on ride-alongs, I have noticed that sometimes sales people, and customers, only sell and buy what they know. They gravitate to what they are comfortable with. When walking through facilities or meeting with exisiting customers, there can be those same missed opportunities. Missed sales opportunities can come from “sticking to what you know.”
