FORMULA-8 thread sealant is engineered into a shear-sensitive thixotropic paste that wets into and seals threaded joints when torqued. Formula-8 is engineered to seal over the entire thread length for the life of the joint in liquid, gas, and vacuum service. Oxygen-safe and NSF approved for food processing facilities, Formula-8 is a water-based thread sealing compound compatible with hydraulic oils and systems, pvc piping, cryogenics, and high temperatures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Formula-8 is designed to seal tapered pipe threads by filling the spaces between the threads during assembly. As the connection is tightened, Formula-8 shears and forms mineral/PTFE strings that pack the threads and help prevent leaks.

Formula-8 works best when this shearing action occurs. For straight-thread or bolt applications, an additional sealing method may be needed to prevent leakage.

Formula-8 is compatible with many solvents and aggressive chemicals, but compatibility depends on the specific chemical or fluid. See our technical data sheet for a partial list of compatible chemicals, or contact us to confirm compatibility for your application.

Formula-8 is not recommended for continuous water exposure. For applications involving continuous contact with water, we recommend LOX-8.

Formula-8 can be used with a variety of common metals and provides lubrication during assembly to help prevent galling, including on stainless steel threads and aluminum hardware. For unusual material combinations or operating conditions, contact us to confirm compatibility.

Yes. Formula-8 is designed to seal tapered pipe threads against fluid and gas leaks.

For straight-thread connections, Formula-8 alone may not fully seal the spiral leak path that can occur between the threads. In these applications, we recommend approximately 1½ wraps of LOX-8 thread tape followed by Formula-8. The tape helps fill the leak path while also providing additional shearing action for Formula-8. For small fasteners, narrow-width tape may be preferred.

Yes. Formula-8 provides lubrication during assembly and helps prevent galling, including on stainless steel threads and aluminum hardware.

Formula-8 is designed for demanding sealing applications, but performance depends on the pressure, temperature, thread type, materials, and fluid or gas involved.

For specific pressure and temperature requirements, see the technical data sheet or contact us. Straight-thread connections, particularly at higher pressures, may require thread tape in addition to Formula-8.

Apply Formula-8 to the threaded connection and assemble according to the recommended application procedure. Because Formula-8 is shear-sensitive, proper assembly and tightening are important for achieving an effective seal.

Formula-8 has a three-year shelf life from the date of manufacture. The five-digit Julian date printed on the crimped end of the tube indicates the manufacturing date.

Once opened, Formula-8 can continue to be used as long as the container is properly closed with the cap in place. Store it away from freezing temperatures and excessive heat.
