What Makes a Great Undercoating?
HinderRUST was invented by chemist Franklin G. Reick, founder of Fluoramics, Inc. Franklin is perhaps most famous as the inventor of the Tufoil engine lubrication additive, holder of the Guinness Book Record for the most efficient lubricant in the world.
So when Franklin decided to attack the problem of rust prevention, he knew it had to be based in real science and chemistry, not the solvent-based snake oil solutions common to most rust inhibitor products.
After Franklin developed the original HinderRUST spray and proved it to be among the best rust inhibitors in the world, he went a step further to address the number one best use of a great rust inhibitor: an undercoating solution for vehicles.
To make a great undercoating product, you have to keep a few things in mind:
- The environment under a car or truck is nasty. Water, mud, pebbles, and road salt routinely pelt the undercarriage of your vehicle. A car undercoating needs to have some serious staying power or you will be reapplying it every few months.
- A solvent-based rust inhibitor just doesn’t make sense. Solvents are toxic, flammable, and mostly evaporate after only a few days. Yet so many rust inhibitors use this chemistry!
- Mechanics, auto-body guys, and car dealers don’t necessarily want you to have a good rust inhibitor as it costs them too much money in lost repair revenue. That’s why we made HinderRUST easy and safe for the do-it-yourselfer to apply without the need for a lift or other professional equipment.
How Does HinderRUST HV100 Work?
By combining HinderRUST with other non-volatile compounds, Franklin G. Reick has transformed the same superior HinderRUST spray formula into a thicker undercoating material. This material is considered a thixotropic material: in other words, it cures into a flexible gel under your vehicle, providing additional protection for your undercarriage and preventing the rust inhibitor from coming off. Yet it is still fluid enough to be easily sprayed onto your car or truck with most standard wide-nozzle sprayers.
HinderRUST undercoating is shipped to you mixed at exactly the right viscosity level for spraying or brushing underneath your truck. Simply shake just like you would a can of paint and you are ready to go. Typically, a gallon is the right size for cars and small trucks. For buses and larger multi-axel trucks, 2 gallons will usually do it.
But perhaps the most remarkable aspect of HinderRUST HV100 is its ability to “heal itself.” As Franklin explains, “HinderRUST is what we call an extremely ‘surface active’ formula; small cracks and imperfections in the coverage will be repaired as the material actively migrates into these areas.”
How to Use HinderRUST HV100 in a sprayer:
Made with the same rust inhibiting and lubrication qualities as the spray, its high-viscosity formula will create a hydrophobic layer that will prevent against future rust and corrosion on the undercarriage of your vehicle.
Overview: The application of HinderRUST to the underbody of a vehicle is very easy.
Step 1. Using a Sure Shot Sprayer with a fan spray or a Low Pressure, High Volume (LPHV) Air Sprayer, apply an even coat of HinderRUST HV100 to the underbody of the vehicle. Our surface-active formula will creep into the smallest of areas over time, protecting and lubricating. Be careful to avoid hot areas like the exhaust pipe and muffler but don’t forget to spray areas such as wheel wells, emergency brake cable, brake lines, and spare tire area. While you’re at it, open the hood on the vehicle and brush HinderRUST HV100 onto your battery terminals to keep them from corroding.
Step 2. When complete, clean out the spray gun to keep the HV100 from setting up inside the spray nozzle.
Step 3. Your vehicle is okay to drive immediately after spraying. Be aware that some HV100 may drip off the bottom of your vehicle and park accordingly. For the best protection possible, make the application of HinderRUST part of your annual vehicle maintenance.
The HinderRUST Difference
Due to the chemistry of our highly viscous mix, the HinderRUST HV100 formula actually becomes more durable after it is applied. The underbody solution cures into a gel which resists being washed off, making it longer-lasting and harder-working. Furthermore, the product has no solvents and thus has no effect on any plastics or body paint in the vicinity of your application, making it the perfect protectant and undercoating shield for exposed metal on your car or outdoor equipment.
